  • Game of Thrones: From the Shadows to Famous with a dash of Crazy Marketing

Game of Thrones MarketingAs a fan of Game of Thrones for years, I was surprised when the show erupted on HBO. Not that I wasn’t thrilled but suddenly this relatively low key series exploded into the public domain. It wasn’t just the series that peaked everyone’s interest, it was also the rather obscure marketing.

The HBO marketing team created a mini-game of their website, with a massive digital rendition of The Wall. The graphics are not only extraordinary but there is a whole adventure to be had within HBO’s website. The game is called Path Maester and for it being a free game, a lot of money went into it, that much is clear.

HBO also utilized a smart phone app. This app is very unique from my perspective. It is a weather app which also tells you where you are in the world of Game of Thrones. Are you a Northern Stark or a princess from Dorne?

The clever virtual tactics which went into this series are sophisticated and unique. Digital marketing pulled Game of Thrones into a new era. For a series which originated in 1996, it sure did fit right into 2013.

  • Walmart and Social Media

This was an article that caught my attention. We all know Walmart has interesting techniques for drawing in customers. Similar to bait and switch, Walmart has very low prices and likes to promote the low priced items by placing them at the front of the isles; the tactic is to make you believe that every item in the story is the best price, which isn’t necessarily true.

But these techniques keep us all hungry for the next great deals, me included in this parade of the masses. Now, imagine being in Wal-mart and as you are walking down isles, “triggers” send messages to you phone right when you’re in store and tell you about deals happening now! Wouldn’t that make your taste buds tickle as you gallivant from one great deal to the next, your favorite electronic device guiding you to low ticket items and promoting them as you stroll around.

Well this is the hope that Walmart is trying to push! They want you shopping, spending and saving around every turn. I’m not sure if anyone has ever even been in a K-Mart store recently but the principle that Walmart in pushing is already somewhat in use at the local K-Mart stores. At K-Mart, when parents bring their kids into the store they are greeted my brightly colored karts which they can push their children around in and the kart play a Dora the Explorer episode or some other funny-loving Nicktoon.

While the children are being entertained up front the parents have a screen of their own right in front of the handle bar. While milling about the store, triggers are placed around various corners and it prompts an advertisement to start playing on the screen for the Adult shopper to observe. This is a very innovative and intelligent idea, and now imagine that same power, but it being sent directly to everyone’s phone as they walk around, you can’t lose and of course Walmart wins everytime!

  • When you’re angry, don’t take it out on your technology!

I know you may be thinking, what is with this video? It did brighten my day significantly because I know we all have our frustrations when technology does not go our way. This video is not just meant to bring so comedic relief it is also an advertisement (a shabby one I might add) for a consulting firm! As marketers it’s important for us to not only capture our audience’s attention but to promote it as well.

What better way to promote a company than to portray the realities of when people just snap. Now we may all not have this kind of stress right now in our lives but usually when the break-point arises who else do we turn on but our beloved technology. Most of us won’t even know what to do without having Facebook at our finger-tips or Twitter blowing up our phone; but sit back and relax folks, your life can’t nearly be as bad as these poor shmucks have it! I’m using this video as an example of catching someones attention, yes it is funny and entertaining to watch but more importantly it got a message across and advertised a little too!

  • What Motivates Us?

Below you will find a quirky and interesting video which really made me think… what is the motivating factor when looking for a career today? Yes we all can’t be choosy but with a single employee doing the job of 3 people, it’s tough to put a price-tag on diminishing free time.

Where do you see yourself working? Do you see yourself as a 9-5 cubicle slave, pencil pushing and just managing to get by on the cuff of monotony? Maybe, maybe not. As a marketing major and having a little marketing experience, I’d say it takes some creativity and ingenuity to promote products or consult for a company. A lot of us think “pay me more money and I will work harder” but is that necessarily true? The values in our society today have changed drastically. The value of free time and personal relaxation far out-weighs a hefty pay check and I can say that finding a company that values you, even if you aren’t making that six figure income, is a company that is a keeper.

Anxiety and depression is a serious problem today, so is obesity and high blood pressure as a result of anxiety and depression. What has been causing the lack of happiness? Lack of a life! Sometimes the most important things in life are not all material oriented. Did you know that the United States is a country full of the unhappiest people in the world? It’s true, so when you are out there, thinking of companies you would like to apply to, find the company that values you, you will do yourself a favor in the long run.
