  • Is the iPhone Finally Coming to T-Mobile?

Analysts of technology trends have been tracking the carrier pick-ups of the iPhone for several years now. After AT&T’s exclusivity with the iPhone ended, speculation came about as to which carrier would be the first to offer the iPhone. Most analysts suspected T-Mobile, but instead, Verizon picked the phone up in 2011. Later that year, both T-Mobile and Sprint were speculated to offer the iPhone, but only Sprint got the contract. One analyst notes that T-Mobile USA may finally get the iPhone next week due to heightened speculation that the parent company to T-Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, will announce its new carrier plans at an event next week. T-Mobile has been left out of an iPhone contract because its network doesn’t support the iPhone. Over the past several months; however, T-Mobile has upgraded its networks in 15 cities in order to be capable to support the iPhone, but many more areas still need to be upgraded. Is this speculation just a rumor that has continued to pop up over the past two years, or will T-Mobile finally become the next iPhone carrier? I guess that we will just have to wait until next week!

  • Sneak Peek: The Future of Advertising

With the rising popularity of social media, advertising and marketing strategies continue to move away from traditional techniques such as the coveted 30-second TV spot. Brands are now focused making routine interactions with consumers where consumers spend a large amount of time: on social media.

In a Forbes article by Rob Schwartz, Schwartz explains his experience being a judge for the Tomorrow Awards, an advertising award show that celebrates the future of advertising, today. The top contenders in the contest imagined an innovative and dynamic form of storytelling, using avenues such as technology, social media, mobile, and even a t-shirt to communicate a message.

    1. Project Glass
Google Glass is a future product that allows you to explore your world with the web literally appearing before your eyes, and share it. Check out the Project Glass video:

    2. Nike Social Response Lab
The Response Lab facilitated a community conversation on social media sites, featuring a team of graphic designers, illustrators, and animators who interacted with fans during game-time.

    3. Mobile Medic
This mobile app out of Australia was tested to recruit the best and brightest medical students that would be worthy of the Defence Force University Scholarship. The team created an entrance exam that forced hopeful entrants to use their smartphones interacting with posters to identify and treat medical conditions.

    4. tshirtOS
tshirtOS is the world’s first programmable t-shirt created by innovators at Ballentine’s. As the video points out, the t-shirt was the “original status update,” and the “original Like on Facebook.” Check out how they re-imagined the storytelling power of the t-shirt:

Do you think these future advertising techniques will be successful? Would you wear a programmable t-shirt?

  • What’s YOUR Klout score?

I know that you are obsessed with social media. You read this blog, you have a Facebook with 800 friends, you tweet everyday, and maybe you even run your own blog. But did you know that you can receive a score of how influential you are amongst all of your social media platforms? It’s called your Klout score, and the Klout webpage is on a mission to rank the influence of every human being that actively uses social media. This so-called “score” is calculated using an algorithm that measures a variety of variables such as frequency of posts or updates, the number of likes or retweets, and shares of your content on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. This score is out of 100 points and high scorers can qualify for “Klout Perks” like freebies from companies eager to advertise their own products. Who has a perfect Klout score you ask? President Obama and Justin Bieber. I personally have a Klout score of 47 which according to wired.com is on par with the Aflac Duck.

If you are in the interviewing process or on the lookout for jobs, be aware that not only do some employers check on your Facebook, but many may even check your Klout score. This pertains especially to jobs that have a strong focus on social media or technology. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t become so obsessed with improving your score or tweeting something every minute, but it’s important to be aware of as our society greatly encourages us to be involved with social media.

What can you do to improve your Klout score?

    1. Improve the “cadence” of your posts and tweets. This means post more often and keep content relevant.
    2. Focus on updating about one topic instead of spreading yourself thin among many topics.
    3. Make and keep relationships with high Klout scorers who are likely to respond to your tweets or retweet them, therefore sending your content out to others.
    4. Keep things upbeat and positive and stay away from negative topics or “bad day” posts.

  • Macy’s Is Bringing Out All The Stars

Have you ever heard of Taylor Swift? Justin Bieber? Diddy? Martha Stewart? Donald Trump? or Carlos Santana? I am pretty sure you have probably heard of the majority of these stars at some point and Macy’s has taken all these public figures and brought them together in one commercial. Talk about star-studded. This has been all part of Macy’s new and pretty effective marketing strategy to show off the different products they hold in their store. Think about it. Why would all those stars all agree to be in one commercial together instead of making more money doing separate commercials? It is because they all have their own products they are selling through Macy’s. Diddy has a clothing line, Bieber has his own cologne, Martha Stewart pretty much sells everything a person would need in a household. The company has also started using technology for their benefit. In 2009 almost 20% of Macy’s sales were online. In 2011, only two years later, that number doubled to just under 40%.

Renovations have also become a Macy’s strategy in attracting more customers. They are spending $400 million just to renovate their flagship store in New York and spending hundreds of millions more to do the same to all their stores around the country. Macy’s is trying to bring a little upscale look to their stores even though their products can sell to people in the middle class. Macy’s has done a very good job in creating an atmosphere in their stores where people want to shop and even if they don’t want to come to the store their website is attractive enough for people to buy online. Bringing in these very popular stars is just a bonus, but it all seems to be working just fine as Macy’s has increased their revenue in each of the last four quarters.

  • Spray On Antenna?

Antenna-In-A-Can Enhances Phone Signals When Sprayed Nearby

I recently read an article about a startup company called Cham Tech.  Cham Tech, based in Utah, recently introduced a product which can apparently act as a wireless antenna at Google’s “Solve For X” Conference.

This product comes in a can which resembles spray paint.  It can be sprayed onto most surfaces including trees, walls, etc., and it then will act as a signal booster for cell phones.. pretty cool.  It would be especially resourceful to people who live in isolated areas and receive little to no cellular service.

On the company website, www.chamtechops.com, you can purchase a “Spray On Antenna Kit”.  The pricing is only available upon request.  With the right marketing strategy this innovation could prove to be HUGE!

  • What’s Good Wednesday: Smart Cities?

We have seen the emergence of smart phones and smart cars, what’s next? The answer to that is smart cities.  I recently read an article about how the infrastructure of cities will be seeing a major change within the next quarter century.  According to statistics, world wide the number of people living in cities now is greater than the population in rural areas for the first time since the existence of man kind.

Take a minute to comprehend that… its really crazy to think about.  The majority of the worlds population is condensed into a very small amount of globes land mass.  In China, by the year 2025 over 350 million people will migrate to cities.. that is more than more than the current US population.

So what do these numbers mean?  Well it means that the way that cities operate will need to change.  That brings us to the point of this article… smart cities.  The concept is to make cities more “capable of delivering services and foster innovation”.  IBM is on the forefront of this movement.  The goal is to implement information communication technologies into the urban infrastructure.

An example is in Rio in Brazil.  Rio was subject to horrible mudslides in the year 2010.  Now the city is taking steps to improve weather predictability and systems that recognize any type of vulnerability.  Safety will be greatly improved as cities progress towards “smart city” status.  Changes that occur will vary in every city.  It will be interesting to see how cities in the US adapt to this new concept.  There is much more behind smart cities, below are links that will further explain what they are!

  • When you’re angry, don’t take it out on your technology!

I know you may be thinking, what is with this video? It did brighten my day significantly because I know we all have our frustrations when technology does not go our way. This video is not just meant to bring so comedic relief it is also an advertisement (a shabby one I might add) for a consulting firm! As marketers it’s important for us to not only capture our audience’s attention but to promote it as well.

What better way to promote a company than to portray the realities of when people just snap. Now we may all not have this kind of stress right now in our lives but usually when the break-point arises who else do we turn on but our beloved technology. Most of us won’t even know what to do without having Facebook at our finger-tips or Twitter blowing up our phone; but sit back and relax folks, your life can’t nearly be as bad as these poor shmucks have it! I’m using this video as an example of catching someones attention, yes it is funny and entertaining to watch but more importantly it got a message across and advertised a little too!

  • Technology’s Tricks and Treats

One of most celebrated holidays of the year is just a few days away. Kids have been anxiously waiting all year . Though the children will be the ones tracking down all the good candy, technology will be doing some tracking as well. A feature Android has came out with is called Trick or Tracker that allows parents to track their teen’s location throughout the night.

Mom and dad may also set up an alert if the teen’s phone leaves a defined perimeter. This new feature will ease the parent’s mind allowing the children to have a bit more freedom on a spooky night of exploration.

The parents are not the only one with a cool new feature Continue reading
