  • New Marketing Technique:Real-Life Pinterest Board

Recently, in the Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla, California they have introduced a real-life Pinterest board. This board was placed in the mall to celebrate their recent 180 million dollar renovation. They will be marketing physical products from participating retailers in the mall and the board includes an interactive game. There is an online Pinterest board where consumers can create their own board titled “Escape Everyday” and win the products from the real-life board! What a neat way to promote their retailers.

Where else do you think this kind of marketing would be effective? What about at Temple?

  • How to Be Smart When Black Friday Shopping

With Black Friday exactly a week away, those of us on the lookout for a shopping marathon of bargain hunting can get excited that the festivities are soon to begin. The name “Black Friday” came about as a way for retailers to signal a shift from losing money to a season of profitability from accounting’s “in the black.” Before you embark on your shopping adventures, there are several myths and traps that you should be ready to avoid:

    1. The Doorbuster Trap:

Many stores advertise extremely low priced items that are offered to a certain number of customers that are the first in the store. Make sure you read the fine print about how many of these items are going to be handed out in the store. Most of the time a very small number like ten items are sold and tickets are distributed to early store comers way before stores even open at midnight.

    2. The Apple Trap

It is common belief that you must visit an Apple store in order to get the best deals. In fact, the same deals are also available online. But don’t expect deep price cuts on any items, and don’t expect discounts in general on brand new products such as the iPad mini and iPad 4.

    3. The Price-Matching Trap

Target just began a new price matching program that runs from November 1 to December 16. Customers can show a store employee a lower priced item on a mobile phone or bring in an original receipt from online retailers including walmart.com and bestbuy.com. Be aware though that Target will not match prices from Black Friday through Cyber Monday and there are a long list of product exclusions on Target’s website.

    4. The I-Can-Return-It Trap

If you are not already familiar with a store’s return policy, you may want to check it especially during the holiday shopping season. Many stores change their policies and shorten the return period time specifically over Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend.

    5. The Cyber Monday Trap

Most people believe that the best online shopping deals happen on the Monday after Black Friday which is known as Cyber Monday. But, most of these deals exist way before Monday and begin at midnight on Black Friday. Don’t miss out on deals that happen online just by waiting until Monday.

  • How to Shop with a Purpose!

We all know the saying…”The holiday season is all about giving”.  Well there are a few ways in which you can give a little more while shopping for your family and friends during the holiday frenzy.  There are two resources that you can use to shop online which will add extra LOVE to your gift purchases.

Your first option is called iGive.  When you find your way to the iGive website it is easy to sign up.  All that you do is simply put in some information and choose a cause in which you would like to benefit and add the “button” to the top of your browser.  Once that is complete you are finished and when you make purchases at participating online vendors (the list consists of at least 900) a donation will be made to your cause.  Last year since 1997 over 5 million dollars has been raised through iGive!

The second option you have is called GoodShop.  GoodShop is an affiliate of GoodSearch which is powered by Yahoo.  This program is Continue reading

With the holiday season just around the corner everyone will soon (if you haven’t already) start to buy or at least think of what to buy for their friends and family.  With that being said the possiblities are truly endless.  However this year take a shot at making all of your purchases in the world of GREEN.

It may take a little more effort and maybe some research but in the end having your purchases be green themed is a gift to everyone.

  • Walmart and Social Media

This was an article that caught my attention. We all know Walmart has interesting techniques for drawing in customers. Similar to bait and switch, Walmart has very low prices and likes to promote the low priced items by placing them at the front of the isles; the tactic is to make you believe that every item in the story is the best price, which isn’t necessarily true.

But these techniques keep us all hungry for the next great deals, me included in this parade of the masses. Now, imagine being in Wal-mart and as you are walking down isles, “triggers” send messages to you phone right when you’re in store and tell you about deals happening now! Wouldn’t that make your taste buds tickle as you gallivant from one great deal to the next, your favorite electronic device guiding you to low ticket items and promoting them as you stroll around.

Well this is the hope that Walmart is trying to push! They want you shopping, spending and saving around every turn. I’m not sure if anyone has ever even been in a K-Mart store recently but the principle that Walmart in pushing is already somewhat in use at the local K-Mart stores. At K-Mart, when parents bring their kids into the store they are greeted my brightly colored karts which they can push their children around in and the kart play a Dora the Explorer episode or some other funny-loving Nicktoon.

While the children are being entertained up front the parents have a screen of their own right in front of the handle bar. While milling about the store, triggers are placed around various corners and it prompts an advertisement to start playing on the screen for the Adult shopper to observe. This is a very innovative and intelligent idea, and now imagine that same power, but it being sent directly to everyone’s phone as they walk around, you can’t lose and of course Walmart wins everytime!
