  • How to Dress for the Job You Want!!!

    http://sp.life123.com/bm.pix/man_in_business_suit-2.s600x600.jpg

We would like to pass on a great resource (more geared towards men) about how to dress for success. It is an online book that explains everything including Coordinating Ties, Finding The Right Suit For Your Body Type, Dressing on a Budget, How to Accessorize, Caring for Your Wardrobe and much more. The book even comes complete with pictures to help get the message across.

Below we will go over a few of the best tips the book offers and you can also follow the link at the bottom to read the entire book online. It’s very informative and helpful.

    1) For an interview play it conservative and choose a suit in dark color such as a black, gray/charcoal, or navy blue. Paired with a white shirt, and a solid tie, these are safe choices that will keep you in the game for almost any interview. Th ere are plenty of other good choices, like a subtle pinstripe or even a plaid – but they aren’t right for every situation and they need to be paired with the right shirt, tie, belt, and shoes.

    2) When trying on a shirt and buttoning up the collar you should be able to insert two fi ngers between the shirt and your neck, but not more. Th e collar should sit up smartly and should not dig into your neck, nor be fl opping around.

    3) The belt should be sized so that you are on the second or third loop from the end of the belt when the belt is fastened. Th is means that you will have about two inches of belt protruding form the end of the buckle.

    4) Never unbutton your shirt in a meeting or when you are outside your office walls. It is a faux pas to allow your undershirt to show. It is better to get a shirt that fi ts you well than to unbutton one when it is uncomfortable.

  • Can Social Media Turn on You?

    http://cdn.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/hires/2009/morethanhalf.jpg

We all know social media is an excellent marketing tool for companies and organizations as well as a great networking tool and a way for us to all connect with our friends and family.

It has also been a hot debate whether or not businesses should be able to survey the social media pages of current and potential employees when making decisions whether to hire or fire these individuals. There are many aspects to this and there is an interesting story in the news right now about a woman who was fired over a Facebook rant and is now fighting back.

The woman criticized her supervisor on her personal Facebook page and then traded Facebook messages about the negative comments with other employees. This was done on her own time and not during work and labor laws have been protecting employees against getting in trouble for  talking to co-workers on their own time about their jobs including making remarks that are critical of managers.

On the other side of this, the company she worked for had a policy in place that prohibited people from talking bad about the organization on the internet which lawyers say is unlawful.

The exact Facebook post that the woman posted from her home read as follows:

“Looks like I’m getting some time off. Love how the company allows a (psychiatric patient)  to be a supervisor.”

A hearing on the case before an administrative law judge is set for Jan. 25. Who’s side are you on?

This event is a great opportunity for Seniors in the Fox School of Business to talk to and network with over 60 employers who are recruiting right here on campus. All of the employers coming will be looking to hire Seniors in the coming months and this is your chance to meet them and learn more about the positions.

Some of the employers attending Thursday’s event with jobs for marketing majors include: General Mills, Liberty Mutual, PNC, Wawa, US Department of Labor, Aerotek, Aetna, and Target Corporation.

To attend this event you must be a CSPD’d Senior with and up-to-date FoxNet profile with your resume uploaded. You must also be dressed in business professional attire.
