“Send the liberal detractors a message that not only does Marco Rubio inspire you…he hydrates you too.”
Almost everyone has seen Republican Marco Rubio’s speech during the State of Union address. Halfway through his speech, Rubio reached down, out of frame, to pick up his water bottle and take a drink. This may not seem like a big deal, but it has turned into a national incident.
At the sip of his “career-killing” drink, the media swarmed in on him like bees on honey. However, rather than crying or causing a media scene, Rubio took his new popularity and turned it into a marketing opportunity.
Within hours of the incident, Rubio began tweeting creative tweets (including a picture of his infamous water bottle), followed by morning talk show appearances, and a branded water bottle campaign that raised $100,000 for his super PAC.
Rubio took the right steps to capitalize on a viral sensation. The Florida senator has now raised more than $100,000 for his Reclaim America political action committee by offering a branded water bottle to anyone who donates $25 or more.

As a fan of Game of Thrones for years, I was surprised when the show erupted on HBO. Not that I wasn’t thrilled but suddenly this relatively low key series exploded into the public domain. It wasn’t just the series that peaked everyone’s interest, it was also the rather obscure marketing.
The HBO marketing team created a mini-game of their website, with a massive digital rendition of The Wall. The graphics are not only extraordinary but there is a whole adventure to be had within HBO’s website. The game is called Path Maester and for it being a free game, a lot of money went into it, that much is clear.
HBO also utilized a smart phone app. This app is very unique from my perspective. It is a weather app which also tells you where you are in the world of Game of Thrones. Are you a Northern Stark or a princess from Dorne?
The clever virtual tactics which went into this series are sophisticated and unique. Digital marketing pulled Game of Thrones into a new era. For a series which originated in 1996, it sure did fit right into 2013.
With Black Friday exactly a week away, those of us on the lookout for a shopping marathon of bargain hunting can get excited that the festivities are soon to begin. The name “Black Friday” came about as a way for retailers to signal a shift from losing money to a season of profitability from accounting’s “in the black.” Before you embark on your shopping adventures, there are several myths and traps that you should be ready to avoid:
1. The Doorbuster Trap:
Many stores advertise extremely low priced items that are offered to a certain number of customers that are the first in the store. Make sure you read the fine print about how many of these items are going to be handed out in the store. Most of the time a very small number like ten items are sold and tickets are distributed to early store comers way before stores even open at midnight.
2. The Apple Trap
It is common belief that you must visit an Apple store in order to get the best deals. In fact, the same deals are also available online. But don’t expect deep price cuts on any items, and don’t expect discounts in general on brand new products such as the iPad mini and iPad 4.
3. The Price-Matching Trap
Target just began a new price matching program that runs from November 1 to December 16. Customers can show a store employee a lower priced item on a mobile phone or bring in an original receipt from online retailers including walmart.com and bestbuy.com. Be aware though that Target will not match prices from Black Friday through Cyber Monday and there are a long list of product exclusions on Target’s website.
4. The I-Can-Return-It Trap
If you are not already familiar with a store’s return policy, you may want to check it especially during the holiday shopping season. Many stores change their policies and shorten the return period time specifically over Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend.
5. The Cyber Monday Trap
Most people believe that the best online shopping deals happen on the Monday after Black Friday which is known as Cyber Monday. But, most of these deals exist way before Monday and begin at midnight on Black Friday. Don’t miss out on deals that happen online just by waiting until Monday.
There is no denying it—marketing has gone digital. And based on a recent survey of 384 national brands, digital marketing tactics prove to be increasingly important components of brand success as we move into 2013.
According to a recent article, 91% of national brands say they plan to spend more or the same on local marketing campaigns in 2013 compared with 2012 spending levels. These expenditures are largely focused on digital marketing strategies: 67.5% of national brands rank digital marketing extremely important to brand success.
In 2013, we can also plan to see a shift in local digital marketing priorities. The top three digital tactics will switch from “other social media” (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), Facebook, and SEO to mobile, local blog, and online customer reviews.

With election day being tomorrow, companies have been taking advantage of all the excitement to market themselves. This method of marketing is called newsjacking and has been rapidly growing in popularity. Newsjacking refers to the practice of capitalizing on the popularity of a news story to amplify your sales and marketing success. So, naturally, the election is ideal for this marketing strategy.
1) Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut derived their marketing campaign around what they are calling “The Pizza Party.” They are holding their own “election” for their Big Dinner Box and are asking their customers to go online and vote on a number of “issues.”
2) PBS
As everyone knows (and heard from CEO H. Melvin Ming, himself), Big Bird has become a prominent figure in the election due to Mitt Romney claiming, as much as he loves Big Bird, he is going to cut PBS funding if elected. Rather than retaliate, PBS strategically took the opportunity to ride the social media wave the exploded after this announcement. PBS purchased a “Promoted Tweet” on Twitter that would be displayed when users searched for “Big Bird.” The link led readers to PBS’s website that explained PBS’s value, importance, and what it stands for.
3) Boston Market
Boston Market strategically decided to launch a campaign called “Market Bowl Poll.” The campaign matched chicken (the left wing) versus turkey (the right wing). The clever campaign used their food for customers to show their support in the election. As part of the campaign, Boston Market asks you to vote for the candidate you prefer, after which you’re rewarded with a coupon to redeem for money off the new dishes.
4) 7-Eleven
Another company to use their products to have their customers show support is 7-Eleven, called the “7-Election.” Customers choose coffee cups that are either blue for President Obama or red for Mitt Romney, with the votes tallied at the check-out counter. Every day, the results are calculated on 7-Eleven’s website.
5) FedEx
Last but not least, FedEx. FedEx took a very clever approach to newsjacking the election, using it as a great opportunity to promote the fact that all of your promotional materials can be printed using their services. And with all of the negative advertisements that get played during political races, FedEx decided to newsjack that negativity by asserting, “Competition may not always be professional, clean, or elegant, but at least your promotional materials can be.”
This presentation was brought to you by the letter “R“. Relevance, Reach and Results. H. Melvin Ming gave a charming and intriguing presentation today at Temple University.
Mr. Ming wound a tale of Sesame Street’s heroism for urban, international and pre-school aged kids. The point of Sesame Street is to prepare children for school, with the help of, what Ming says, is the “power of the picture”. The visuals accompanied by repetition and interaction helps youngsters prepare for the harsh realities of school.
Relevance
What does the child need to learn in home? An adult committed to that child’s education. How does Sesame Street do this? With the use of celebrity appearances! What a clever way to get parents to sit side by side with their toddler.
Reach
Did you know Sesame Street goes beyond the US? Internationally Sesame Street is a core component in educating international children. Muppet’s teach youngsters English, respect and acceptance of diversity. Did you know there was a Sesame Street school in India? That’s right, a pre-school devoted to Sesame Street and with proven results. Sesame Street brings real world issues and presents them in age appropriate
Results
Children who watch Sesame Street at pre-school age, tend to scored 15% better in high school. When teens do better in High School they tend to want to move on to college. With better educated people there is a better chance of these individuals finding better careers, and all of these power stems from what is taught to toddlers before pre-school. The sooner children learn, the better their chances are after high school.
H. Melvin Ming’s last words for Temple students: “You are a treasure, use what you have.”
Ming never imagined he’d be CEO and President of Sesame Street Workshop, when he was here at Temple University back in the 60′s. This just goes to show you that the skies the limit and keep your options, and mind’s open for opportunities!
This was a fantastic presentation, one that was a joy to attend!
